“I’m just happy to be here!”
It’s getting ready to be wild weather season in the States. As hot and cold fronts clash across the US, hurricanes and tornadoes will be turning things upside down. Landscapes will be jumbled, news interviews will be mumbled, and some parts of our nation will be crumbled. (I know, I forced that last one.)
What’s the point? The point is, when you mix the right two things, the power for change is tremendous.
When someone has the right mix of humility and awareness it can create a tornado of gratitude. And when it really starts ripping, your whole world can be turned upside down.
So how do you get the right mix?
Start with a healthy dose of humility. Humility is simply coming to terms with the fact that you don’t know everything about everything. There’s always some way I can learn, grow, improve. I’ve been coaching for 12 years, but I could be better. When someone offers feedback, I can humbly accept it, thank them, and improve.
Add a healthy dose of gratitude. You know what that is. But you can’t really fake it. The best way to start growing in gratitude is to look for Bright Spots. What little interactions brighten up your day? Did you get a smile from a stranger? A hug from a kid? An air high five from a coach? What you pay attention to grows. Look for Bright Spots and you’ll find zillions of them.
Then put those pours into a martini shaker and mix them aggressively. When you combine the humility to stop being the most important thing in your universe with gratitude for all of the Bright Spots you can identify, you’ll find a force that will turn your world upside down.
I don’t have this mastered, but I’ve been working on perspective for a long time. Pretty much every day you hear me tell someone, “I’m living the dream!”
And I really mean it!
Riding into the gym this morning, I had a few quiet moments of humility mixed with gratitude that prepared me for a day of seeking Bright Spots. We (the staff at SRCF) get to spend so much transformative time with you all. We celebrate the highs and learn from the lows. We see relationships grow, babies be born, and kids go off to college. We see people get off of medications, get off of the couch, and accomplish feats they never dreamed were possible.
The opportunity to turn your world upside down is just moments away. Want to walk the path with us?
