When did you start crossfitting? October 2012

Why did you start?  I visited my best friend in Santa Fe, NM in October, 2012.  Her cousin started telling me about CrossFit and how it had changed her life.  I had researched CrossFit online previously and was overwhelmed by how difficult it looked.  I am not the strong, athletic girl type. But I went to a class with her and it was a partner WOD.  I did things I had never done before – ran around a parking lot with a medicine ball on my shoulder, wall balls, back squats, etc.  It was such a hard work out, but the coaches and complete strangers were cheering me on and it was the most incredible experience.  I came back to Greenville and was telling Bonnie Benthall all about it.  It just so happened that SRC was opening the very day I told her the story.  She told me to go check it out.  I took her advice and the rest is history.

What were your thoughts after the first workout?  I vividly remember walking into SRC that first Friday morning and feeling very nervous.  For over 20 years, I was used to bouncing around in aerobics or spin classes, and this looked completely different.  I was definitely out of my comfort zone.  Jake and William met me as I walked in the door and immediately welcomed me.  Never had a coach or teacher ever greeted me or taken the time to know my name.  I had been going to the same gym in Greenville for almost 10 years and none of the teachers ever called me by name.  Anyway, I remember the very first WOD I did had pull ups and GHD sit ups.  There was also a third thing, but I forget what it was.  I was given a blue band for my pull ups and could only do 6 of them (out of the 21 I was supposed to be doing).  I got on the GHD machine and was terrified of it.  I was afraid to go backwards on that thing.  I had to get off and do AB Mat sit ups instead.  All in all, I was pretty pathetic.  But the coaches worked with me and I got through it.  And, for some reason I can’t explain, I had the best time and felt great afterwards.  The coaches were so encouraging and made me feel proud of myself.  I couldn’t wait to come back and try more new things.  And that feeling hasn’t worn off to this day.

What is your favorite WOD? I like anything that doesn’t have handstand push ups, robe climbs or excessive lifting.  Some of my favorite WODs have been “The 12 Days of Christmas”, the Thanksgiving day WOD, Tabata, Deck of Death, any of the partner WODs (loved partner “Angie”); I like most of the named girl WODS and Hero WODS (I don’t have fun during them, but I love to say I have done a named WOD – makes me proud)

Least Favorite WOD? Valentine’s Day Massacre — 150 Wall Balls, 90 Double Unders, 30 Muscle Ups – that was a bad, bad day

Favorite Lift? Deadlift

Least Favorite Lift? Overhead Squat

What are your interests outside of crossfit?  I have been married to my husband Rhett for 13 years and we have two wonderful boys, Logan (8) and Austin (6).  We also have a dog, 2 fish and a crested gecko.  I am a stay-at-home mom and my kids keep me very busy.  I am usually running them around to all of their activities most weekends and afternoons.  I also enjoy volunteering at my kids’ school, our church, The Greenville Medical Alliance, the Junior League and Safe Harbor.  I love to spend time with my family and we like biking on the Swamp Rabbit trail, hiking, swimming or doing anything outdoors.  I also like to bake and share treats with the staff and members at SRC, but this nutrition challenge has put a damper on that.

What advice would you give someone just starting crossfit at SRC?  My advice would be to keep coming and not to get discouraged.  Give 100% every time you walk through the door and you will never regret it.  You will improve.  You will get stronger.  You will do things you never thought your body could do.  You will meet some of the absolute best people in your classes.  Your coaches will support you and push you and cheer you on.  They will believe in you when you don’t believe in yourself.  I cannot put into words the sense of pride you will feel when you get that first double under or move from a green band to a blue one.  Any small improvement, even 5 pounds on a lift, is huge and will completely transform your day and mood.  CrossFit at SRC will change your life.  It has definitely changed mine.

What is one thing we might not already know about you I don’t really have any cool stories or interesting fun facts.  So I will just list some things that make me happy – a cup of coffee first thing in the morning (with cream and sugar), sunrises and sunsets, anything chocolate, singing loudly in my car, playing with my kids, date nights, reading in bed every night, and hearing the coaches yell “time” to signal that a WOD is over.
